I've been quite busy over the past month.

Hi everyone! Just a quick update since I've basically fallen off the internet map. I've had a few things going on:
- I declined a job offer
- I did a big case study
- I moved
I'll wrap up by talking about what's next, a.k.a. my objectives for the near future.
Declining the job
I interviewed with a company for a business analyst / data analyst position. The position itself seemed reasonable, but the career path the company offered wasn't among the career paths I'm interested in (as the company had no offerings in the data analysis / data science space). I'm very focused on finding the right fit, with a company I can stay with long-term, so I had to decline.
Since my last blog post, I did a case study for a company which was unfortunately immediately thereafter subject to a takeover. I finished the case study anyway, as it involved real data and therefore wasn't contrived at all, so I felt it would be very relevant experience to the "real world". Unfortunately, the hiring manager's LinkedIn headline went from "WE ARE HIRING" to a generic description of their position, and I haven't heard back from the recruiter, so it looks like that opportunity flew the coop.
I'm considering de-identifying the data and/or my presentation to start a portfolio for my LinkedIn, but that's not something I'll take lightly since the data (although posted publicly) was real data. That means I'm not going to even consider that as an option until I know for certain I won't be breaking the trust the company placed in me by giving me access to the data in the first place, which I am absolutely not certain of yet, so I am going to keep it in the back of my mind only.
I also moved out of my apartment and started renting a room in a house in the burbs, and moving always takes a while. The amount I'm saving in rent will greatly extend my ability to make sure my next job is the right job, though, which is really important to me.
I have 3 primary objectives:
- Put together a portfolio
- Continue learning
My primary objective now is networking. I've had some great conversations in the past month or so and have had a few interviews every week, but have yet to find the right position at the right company (although I can tell I'm close).
My secondary objective is to get some more projects together for a portfolio. I like what I'm doing with the website and all, but I don't know that it's the most conducive to showing employers I'm capable. I found an inexpensive self-paced bootcamp from Dataquest.io which provides a few different paths with several guided projects each to put in a portfolio, so keep an eye out for those.
My tertiary objective is to continue learning. The "path" I'm on from Dataquest is "Data Analysis in Python", which provides a guided introduction to many of the items already on my two-year plan. Take a look here!
I'll probably get back into the supply chain textbook or NLP once I get through the paths from Dataquest, or as I have time on the weekends / etc.
I'll keep you posted!contact me
