Finding your dream vacation destination (with NLP)

Garrett Mayock posted 2019-05-06 03:33:33 UTC

I once again dove into the back-end of my server to get this model implemented on my new "Vacation Planner" page. Check it out!

Quick update

Garrett Mayock posted 2019-03-17 19:13:25 UTC

Spending some time on the weekend learning about NLP. The first in what will be a series of introductory-level posts, this post introduces NLTK and tokenization.

Holt-Winters' α,β,γ Model for Seasonal Time Series

Garrett Mayock posted 2019-03-16 02:12:13 UTC

Coding Holt-Winters' model in Python and playing with a few optimization parameters. Demonstrating the strength of Holt-Winters' on Housing Starts data.

New image meta tags for blogs!

Garrett Mayock posted 2019-03-06 06:43:09 UTC

I wrote PHP to allow meta images to be uploaded for each blog, or revert to a default. Better yet, it's extensible, so I can easily create a new meta image for each subdirectory when I so desire.

Adjusting Linear Regression Models for Seasonality

Garrett Mayock posted 2019-03-06 02:07:52 UTC

In this blog, I describe seasonality and show how to create a seasonally-adjusted forecast of data. Including seasonality greatly improves the forecast.

Fixing inefficient optimization code in Python

Garrett Mayock posted 2019-03-02 02:21:52 UTC

I wrote some extremely inefficient highly recursive code yesterday. Today, I fix it. End result? Read the blog to find out!!!! (PS it was good or I would still be working on it lol)

Holt's α,β Model for Predicting Time Series with Trends

Garrett Mayock posted 2019-03-01 05:58:28 UTC

I calculate Holt's model in Excel and Python, compare it with linear regression, and try my hand at duplicating Holt's model and optimizing it's parameters in Python using scipy.optimize. It's slow...

Linear Regression for Predicting Time Series with Trends

Garrett Mayock posted 2019-02-28 17:46:45 UTC

Here we look at regression analysis using Microsoft Excel's Analysis TookPak add-in as well as various packages and methods in Python including matrix multiplication.

Non-naive Models for Predicting Stationary Time Series Data

Garrett Mayock posted 2019-02-27 22:34:43 UTC

Continuing learning Python as I read Managing Supply Chain Operations, this completes the stationary time series models in Chapter 2: Forecasting and Demand Management, including some SciPy!

Naive Models for Predicting Stationary Time Series Data

Garrett Mayock posted 2019-02-27 06:28:01 UTC

This details my efforts to learn Python concurrently with the Supply Chain textbook I'm reading. I enter data in Excel, ingest it in Python, and use various packages to recreate the chapter material.

Combining PDFs using Python and PyPDF2

Garrett Mayock posted 2019-02-26 18:44:17 UTC

I had to combine two PDFs. The source documents (Word files) had different templates, so a manual combination could be tricky. Instead, I programmed a generic PDF merger in Python using PyPDF2.

Garrett Mayock posted 2019-02-20 21:40:01 UTC

My reading has shown me a new career path option. I've also had a great time continuing improv, and will be performing more frequently in March and April. And, finally, I have started the job search.

Why do I even want to be a data scientist?

Garrett Mayock posted 2019-01-14 21:49:05 UTC

I’ve got the right aptitudes to succeed as a competent data scientist and I enjoy coding, mathematics, data analysis, and problem solving.
